Joe Matthews has been a trial and appellate advocate before courts and arbitral tribunals for almost 40 years. He is a magna cum laude graduate of the University of Miami, School of Law where he was an Editor of the Law Review and recipient of the Wesley Sturges Award, graduating first in his class in 1977.

Mr. Matthews has been a neutral arbitrator for more than 25 years, and has served in cases administered by the American Arbitration Association, the International Centre for Dispute Resolution, ICSID and the ICC International Court of Arbitration. He has served as an advocate, arbitrator or mediator in hundreds of cases involving a wide range of business disputes, contracts, securities, construction, fraud, insurance, healthcare, employment and international business and investment conflicts. He has served as a Special Master in complex multi-party arbitration proceedings before the American Arbitration Association. He is a Fellow and Chartered Arbitrator of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and a Fellow of the College of Commercial Arbitrators. He was for 12 years a member of the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee of the American Arbitration Association. Mr. Matthews is a Florida Certified Circuit Mediator and is certified by the Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution (CEDR) as a Mediator. He serves as mediator in commercial, construction, employment, class action and personal injury cases pending in state and federal courts of the United States, as well as in commercial and investment arbitration disputes domestically and internationally. He is a member of the Panel of Mediators appointed by the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida and is also on the AAA Panel of Mediators. As an advocate and mediator, Mr. Matthews has participated in more than 100 mediations.

As an arbitrator Mr. Matthews has served in more than 150 cases covering a great many subject areas.  While most of these have been confidential, a general description of some of these arbitration cases and the outcomes is provided elsewhere in this website.

Mr. Matthews is certified by the Florida Supreme Court as a Circuit Civil Mediator and by the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida as a Mediator.

Mr. Matthews is available to serve as arbitrator or mediator anywhere in the domestic United States and around the world in commercial and investment disputes of all kinds.  As an advocate and arbitrator, he has served in disputes involving individuals, consumers, classes of consumers, employees and employers, entrepreneurs, small, medium and large corporations and some of the largest multinational corporations in the world.  He has brought claims against governments on behalf of private citizens and corporations and acted on behalf of government entities.  As arbitrator and mediator he has served in cases involving private as well as governmental parties.  The subject matter of these disputes has been wide ranging and the disputes have taken place in more than one forum, including courts, administrative agencies and arbitration forums, often in multiple countries or multiple jurisdictions within countries.

Because of the diversity of his service as an advocate for 40 years and arbitrator for more than 25 years, it is impossible to pigeon hole Mr. Matthews as arbitrator or mediator.  In every case it is essential to be neutral and independent but no arbitrator is right for every case.  Hopefully, the information contained in the website will permit more informed decisions about whether Mr. Matthews is appropriate for service as arbitrator of mediator in any particular case.
